 Preparing for War:
the Co F 5th Reg't Carberry Volunteers from Virginia

In this newest video I made the kids fight for the Confederate side in the Civil War - AND they are from Virginia!  sorry, LOL.. but as you know, there was no Idaho in 1863, so they couldn't be from Idaho.  As I analyzed the clips, most of them were of Confederate gray colors on the uniforms from the people at the park.  So here is the story I created for this video:

Setting:  from April 30th, 1863 - June 30, 1863, right up to the day before the Battle of Gettysburg.
Plot:  we follow the letters written from a young son, leaving his parents, and joining the Co F 5th Reg't Carberry Volunteers from Virginia.  This Reg't only has about 24 people in it (our Room A108 class), and they are joined by a much larger group from all over Virginia, about 3,000 in all (all the 5th graders that came to Eagle Island Civil War Days on Friday).  They want to fight for General Lee and their beloved South.  They are under the command of George E. Pickett from Richmond...

 3-D Cell Models
According to the Science Standards, 5th graders must know the basic parts of the plant and animal cell and the main two differences between them (animal cell has no cell wall or chloroplasts) - ISAT type questions.  So, I had the kids build 3-D cell models so they physically labeled cell parts themselves instead of reading them in a book.  They had to label:  vacuoles, nucleus, 1 chromosome, mitochondria, membrane, cytoplasm.

Designing Boats
The world-famous kids of Room A108 are at it again! This time the kids are discovering the best designs to float a boat. Don't miss this episode - complete with competitions and an Olympic style medal ceremony at the end!

Does Gas Exist?

...that's exactly what I had Room A108's 5th graders answer in this science activity.  How can they make a bag pop using a solid and a liquid?

Volcanoes!

Kids built volcanoes. We used soil, dish washing soap, baking soda, vinegar,
food coloring, plastic trays. It was great! Kids love the hands on science!

Mixtures & Solutions

The kids learned mixtures and
solutions by solving a science challenge:  how can you separate a salt
and pepper mix? For the first time this year I taught an entire science
chapter in the book doing science inquiry activities.

Room A108 Promo, second season
What is Room A108 like? Made primarily for new 5th graders entering the classroom, this is a trailer I produced. Welcome to Room A108 at Carberry Intermediate in Emmett, Idaho.
